Top Television Selections: Seven Must-Watch Films In the Days Ahead

Pick of the Week

The Substance Film

The filmmaker's daring satire tackles the tyranny of feminine aesthetics along with the dreaded aspects of growing older. Demi Moore delivers an inspired acting turn as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old film star demoted to hosting an aerobics show on TV. Edged out thanks to her deceitful superior her manager Harvey, she undergoes a secretive and gruesome treatment known as "The Substance". This produces a new version of herself called Sue, resulting in a progressively parasitic dynamic between the two. This Friday, Paramount Plus

This Mystery Thriller

This Agatha Christie-esque mystery includes Knightley playing Laura, a skilled journalist who opts for a break from covering international wars to board a high-end voyage alongside a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and donor, her partner, plus additional filthy rich individuals. But after an enigmatic female disappears from the ship overnight and all passengers claims she was never there, the reporter's sleuthing skills awaken. Streaming currently, on Netflix

Presence Film

Soderbergh challenges his film-making abilities through this innovative supernatural story shot entirely from the viewpoint of a ghost. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe occupies their new suburban house, the filming device – AKA the Presence – follows them around. Chloe seems aware of the ghostly being, and it seems defensive toward her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that remains concise, with a twist you might not see coming. This Saturday, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image via this self-referential adventure. He acts as a narcissistic film star called Nicolas Cage who takes on a $1m payday to visit a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for the rich Javi Gutierrez. Recruited by the CIA to gather intel on the alleged criminal, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, prime time, the Channel 4 network

The Black Phone

Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror remains effective without requiring a follow-up. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, a series of child abductions has rendered the youth frightened. Once Finney is taken by the villain and locked up in a cellar, he fears a fatal end. However, the old telephone mounted nearby continues to ring, with eerie communicators giving advice, and the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. October 11th, nighttime, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the battle between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for greed in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top true story of the disgraced televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield plays the venal Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals commence capitalizing on the nation's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of poor styling, bad makeup and bad faith, though Chastain manages to present the character as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, late night, Film4

This Espionage Thriller

This week's another release by the same director presents a espionage tale as sharp like the turtlenecks used by Michael Fassbender's UK spy. His assignment is to identify a mole inside the organization from a group of five – including is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are experts of calm composure, resulting in an engaging mental battle of deception or honesty unfolds. Additional actors participate the clever spy entertainment. Friday 17 October, various showings, Sky Cinema
