A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
